Chinese President impressed by logistics turntable logport
Duisburg, 29.03.2014 | Large reception for President Xi Jinping in the Port of Duisburg / “Yuxinou” train connection between Chongqing and Duisburg regarded as new Silk Road / Strong commitment to the economic and logistics location Duisburg
About 250 guests of honor accompanied the State Visit of the Chinese President Xi Jinping this Saturday on the logport logistics site in the Port of Duisburg. Together with Vice Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel and NRW Minister President Hannelore Kraft, Erich Staake, Chief Executive Officer of Duisburger Hafen AG, received the President. The focus was on the arrival of the “Yuxinou” train, which connects the cities of Chongqing in Central China and Duisburg with each other in just 16 days. The high ranking visit underlines the importance of the industrial and logistics location North Rhine- Westphalia (NRW).
NRW Minister President Hannelore Kraft: “This train connection is more than a logistics project. It is a strong symbol with a historic background. The new Silk Road is an impressive example for the dynamic of the trade relations between our countries.”
The visit to the Port of Duisburg is the only visit being made to a company during the European trip of the Chinese President. The background to the visit is the Yuxinou train, a continuous train connection between Chongqing and Duisburg that has its starting point and destination on the logport site. The Yuxinou train symbolizes the new Silk Road for the Chinese government. The Chinese Trade Minister Gao, who gave a short speech on the occasion of the visit, emphasized the good cooperation between China and Germany: “As a starting point and destination of the train, the Port of Duisburg plays a decisive role in the movement of goods between Germany and China. We will continue to further develop this connection with our German partners”.
For Erich Staake this visit is also evidence of the growing importance of Sino-German trade relations. “At the moment the Port of Duisburg is the only port in Europe that offers several transcontinental train connections to China. In Chongqing and Duisburg, two of the most important logistics turntables in China and Central Europe are connected to each other by rail. The fact that the Chinese President has selected the starting point and destination of this train connection for his European trip underlines the importance China attaches to the economic and logistics location NRW,” said Staake.
In the Yuxinou train a connection between two nations has been created that has ensured worldwide attention. The visit of the President was broadcast live on Chinese television. The General Consul of the People’s Republic of China spoke of around 100 million television viewers for this event in China.
“China has become a strategic market for Duisburg. The Yuxinou train is more than a train system, it is a symbol for a new quality in the trade partnership of our countries,” concluded Erich Staake.
Background information on the Yuxinou train: The Yuxinou train covers a route of almost 11,000 km within 16 days. It was started in summer 2011 as the first train between China and Germany with a frequency of one round trip per week.
Duisburger Hafen AG played a decisive role in bringing this connection about. The Yuxinou train has become an intercontinental success story with up to three departures per week. It provides positive growth prospects in both directions.
