duisport increases total handling volume to 68 million tons
Duisburg, 17.12.2015 | Another increase in the total handling volume in the ports of the duisport Group / Combined transportation remains growth engine / Subdued developments expected for 2016
According to current projections, the duisport Group will handle a total cargo volume of 68 million tons in 2015 (2014: 64.7 million tons). This represents an increase of aroundfive percent. The positive result in the combined transport segment in particular played a crucial role in this development. “Container handling via ship, rail, and truck is set to grow by six percent to 3.6 million TEU (2014: 3.4 million TEU), thereby reaching yet another all-time high. In view of the stagnating logistics markets in Europe, we can be very pleased with the results that have been achieved,” says Erich Staake, Chief Executive Officer of Duisburger Hafen AG.
“This was the first time since the 2008/09 financial crisis that we experienced a slight decline in sea container handling at Hamburg - Le Havre range. In view of these developments, I am quite happy with the past year. We obviously did quite well, and were able to gain additional market share,” according to Staake.
The main drivers in 2015 were the segments mineral oils, chemical products and combined transportation/container handling. The steel business, which was weak due to market conditions, was compensated with growth in these segments.
duisport is not expecting any significant improvement in the global trade situation for the coming year. Some of the large Asian seaports registered significant declines compared to the previous year. This also has an effect on the Asia-Europe trades. “At this time, there is no real driver for global economic growth. Therefore, we are not expecting growth impulses for the coming year, which means that developments in 2016 will likely be very subdued,” says Staake.
