Therefore Duisburg is looking for sponsors to support all of the city's fountains across the city. A sponsor assumes the costs for the operation, maintenance and smaller repairs for the respective fountain. The city's initiative is directed not just at companies, but also clubs, associations and citizens who care deeply about the fountains. A sponsor plaque will be attached by the city to the relevant fountain.
Duisburger Hafen AG (duisport) has become the first sponsor of a city fountain. Sören Link, Mayor of the city of Duisburg, Erich Staake, Chief Executive Officer of Duisburger Hafen AG and Deputy Mayor Carsten Tum used this occasion to introduce the concept to a wider public today. "At the economic table in December last year, I advised of the opportunity to become a fountain sponsor. I am really pleased that Mr. Staake immediately offered to become a sponsor of the Mercator fountain. The operation of fountain facilities is of great importance to a city's attractiveness," says Link.
"The Duisburg Brunnenmeile (fountain mile) is one of the landmarks of Duisburg. As a company with regional roots, we were particularly interested in taking responsibility for one of the fountains. In this way, we want to contribute to maintaining the historic cityscape of Duisburg," emphasizes port manager Erich Staake.
Deputy Mayor Carsten Tum was also very pleased: "The Mercator fountain, which is a protected heritage site, is one of the oldest fountains in Duisburg. Its location in front of the historic city hall is also a popular place for foreign visitors. I am very thankful to Duisburger Hafen AG, one of the city's largest employers, that it has secured the operation of this fountain by becoming a sponsor."
The search for additional fountain sponsors continues. Anyone interested in becoming a sponsor can contact the City Development Department (Tel.: 0203/283-2041, email: c.mainka[∂]stadt-duisburg.de)
