duisport and CURRENTA intensify collaboration
Krefeld/Duisburg, 09.05.2011 | duisport and CURRENTA intensify collaboration
Contractual cooperation creates new basis
The duisport Group (Duisburger Hafen AG) and the CHEMPARK operator Currenta GmbH & Co. OHG, a joint venture of Bayer AG and LANXESS Deutschland GmbH, want to further build on their long term collaboration. duisport Chief Executive Officer Erich Staake and Dr. Klaus Schäfer, Chairman of the Executive Board of CURRENTA, signed a cooperation agreement to this end in Duisburg today. The main target is cooperation in realizing selected infrastructure projects, especially developing the CT Terminal - a handling facility for combined transport – in Hohenbudberg as well as a corresponding marshaling yard in the CHEMPARK location Krefeld-Uerdingen.
Through the construction of a new CT terminal by the duisport Group in Hohenbudberg the companies based in CHEMPARK Krefeld-Uerdingen, as potential users of the terminal, will receive direct access to the national and international CT network. Container and trailer traffic can mainly be processed on the tracks via the new terminal.
"This cooperation represents an important building block in developing our handling capacities, representing an important focus at the Duisburg location in particular, as before," said Erich Staake, Chief Executive Officer of Duisburger Hafen AG. "We are pleased that by intensifying collaboration with CURRENTA we can enhance synergies, including beyond the city boundaries. At the same time this cooperation is strengthening our strategic orientation on chemical logistics activities," continued Staake.
"The cooperation with duisport continues our forward looking path to the future. As one of the largest chemicals parks in Europe, we are now pleased to be looking for common paths to sustainably increase the success and attractiveness of our location with the operator of the largest inland port in the world," added Dr. Klaus Schäfer, Chairman of the Executive Board of Currenta GmbH & Co. OHG.
For CHEMPARK Krefeld-Uerdingen the implementation of the project also means investigating the extension of the existing rail site in the southern part of the plant. A so-called "marshaling yard" will emerge here, which will provide the trains for the container terminal. Because the CHEMPARK and the duisport terminal site adjoin each other directly, a connection between the two plots of land is planned via a new road on the non-public area. The roughly one kilometer long connecting road will open up new possibilities to the CHEMPARK partners and will offer numerous advantages in container traffic. Thus in future the loading units will not have to be transported to terminals further away but can be handled in close proximity to the plant.
The implementation of this declaration of intent would result in many advantages for CHEMPARK: "Alongside the significantly increased flexibility, for example transport running times will be shorter, CO2 balances will be better and the transport costs of our CHEMPARK partners will be cheaper. With the even better linking of CHEMPARK Krefeld-Uerdingen to the national rail network by combining the container terminal with the marshaling yard on our site we will become even more interesting to potential investors. We will come more in the focus of companies looking for production areas with optimal logistics links. Thus the project will ultimately strengthen the two towns, both Krefeld and Duisburg“, said Stefan Dresely, Head of the CHEMPARK Krefeld-Uerdingen.
Alongside the two infrastructure projects the cooperation partners are also planning the mutual utilization of services. Against this background the contracting partners consider each other to be a "preferred partner". To implement the projects described and for further intensive collaboration there will be regular meetings between the two partners in future.
As a joint venture of Bayer AG and LANXESS AG, Currenta GmbH & Co. OHG is the operator of CHEMPARK with its three German locations in Leverkusen, Dormagen and Krefeld-Uerdingen. With a total area of eleven square kilometers, CHEMPARK is one of the largest chemicals parks in Europe. Employing around 5,300 employees, CURRENTA and its two subsidiaries Chemion and Tectrion ensure an optimal framework for the over 70 partners currently with a varied product package and a comprehensive service portfolio. This includes relocation management, energy provision, environmental services, security, analytics, training, logistics and maintenance. CURRENTA also offers some of these services to external customers.
