Memorial plaque inaugurated at logport I
Duisburg, 10.10.2013 | Duisburger Hafen AG donates memorial / Joint inauguration with ThyssenKrupp / Remembrance of 100 years of steel production in Rheinhausen / Change to logistics location since 1998
Duisburger Hafen AG has decided to appropriately reshape the historic Gate 1 of the former steelworks in Duisburg-Rheinhausen. In this connection, the duisport Group commissioned the well- known firm of architects RKW (Rhode Kellermann Wawrowsky Architektur + Städtebau). The memorial plaque, which was inaugurated today together by Duisburger Hafen AG and ThyssenKrupp AG, is a reminder of the steel production carried out there from 1893-1993 and the change of the site to a logistics location since 1998. “I am very pleased that we have been able to hold this inauguration together with Dr. Hiesinger,” said Erich Staake, Chief Executive Officer of Duisburger Hafen AG, before the official unveiling. “With this memorial plaque we remember the many people who were employed here over the course of time. But we also want to look to the future. Today, as many jobs have been created here as there were during the time of the steelworks in the middle of the 1980s.”
Dr. Heinrich Hiesinger, Chairman of the Executive Board of ThyssenKrupp AG, emphasized: “This location vouches for the fact that the structural change of the Ruhr region can be successful. It vouches for the fact that it is possible to fundamentally change the economic basis of a region – however painful such processes can be.”
Around 50 companies, including numerous global players such as Kühne & Nagel, DB Schenker and Siemens, have since located on the 265ha logport I site. The whole site is fully marketed and over 4,000 direct jobs have been newly created here since 1998.
