Job engine Port of Duisburg secures more than 45,000 workplaces

duisport has commissioned extensive studies to investigate the labor market and economic effects of the logistics location Duisburg at regular intervals since the year 2000. After the studies conducted in 2006 and 2011, the well-known Berlin market research institute Regionomica GmbH was again commissioned to conduct the study in 2015. The results, which were officially presented today, impressively highlight the continued positive economic growth of the Port of Duisburg.
According to the current study, the number of employees whose workplace is directly and indirectly dependent on the port increased by around 12% to 45,300 (2011: 40,600). Thus the port remains a supporting pillar in the region’s economic infrastructure and labor market. The entire added value that can be traced back to the port grew by 4% to EUR 2.8 billion (2011: EUR 2.67 billion).
“These numbers impressively confirm that the growth of the logistics industry in Duisburg and the surrounding regions continues on its course,” says Erich Staake, Chief Executive Officer of Duisburger Hafen AG (duisport). “They also offer proof of the quality of this location, now one of the leading logistics regions in Europe.”
Overall, more than 18,400 workplaces depend directly on the port and are based in the region. Therefore, direct employment has seen disproportionate growth of 15% compared to 2011 (16,100). This is due in particular to the increasing number of companies based at the port and the higher usage ratio of the port by the logistics and industrial businesses in the surrounding area.
“The study impressively highlights how successful hinterland ports can become important growth engines for cities and federal states. Duisburg offers ample proof of how a city can develop from a location dedicated solely to the handling of goods to a dynamic economic location with value-added logistics services,” adds State Secretary Michael von der Mühlen.
Of the 45,300 workplaces that are dependent on the port, approximately 22,000 are with the city of Duisburg, which represents 13% of all workplaces. Thus more than every 8th workplace depends on the Port of Duisburg. The 300 businesses in the public port employ over 11,400 people, an increase of 13% compared to 2011 (10,100). “The Port of Duisburg is a key economic factor for the city of Duisburg. But this positive growth also represents an obligation to continue to develop the location,” says mayor Sören Link.
The development of new locations will be a key requirement for the addition of new companies and hence the development of additional added value potentials, since the current port areas offer very little space for new entrants and expansions. duisport has already responded to this situation and is working with partners such as Evonik Industries AG and RAG Montan Immobilien GmbH to drive forward the development of logistics locations in the entire Rhine-Ruhr region as one of its key tasks.
To prepare the study, the market research institute Regionomica conducted extensive company surveys and used this data to perform simulation and impact calculations. Technical discussions and interviews with selected companies and relevant stakeholders also provided supplementary qualitative assessments.
