Kühne + Nagel further develops activities in the Port of Duisburg
Duisburg, 20.09.2012 | New logistics center on logport I inaugurated / Kühne + Nagel sets focus on investment
With the inauguration of a new logistics center the Kühne + Nagel Group, which operates worldwide, has expanded its logistics area in the Port of Duisburg to almost 185,000 square meters. Thus Duisburg is the company’s largest site worldwide. In future Kühne + Nagel will process the picking, storage and distribution of cleaning and body care products to markets in Germany, the Netherlands and Austria from here for a globally operating large customer from the consumer goods industry. The new logistics complex has been built on Kühne-und-Nagel-Platz on the logport I site by the duisport Group. The warehouses with a floor space of 22,000 square meters were built and handed over turnkey ready in just seven months.
“Kühne + Nagel has been one of the largest investors in the port area for many years. This new commitment is already the fifth expansion of the logistics area at the Duisburg location,” said Erich Staake, Chief Executive Officer of Duisburger Hafen AG. “This underlines the strategic significance which the company attaches to the location and its network.”
“Kühne + Nagel came to Duisburg as a pioneer. Our assessments of the promising development of the location have been confirmed yearly since then,” said Klaus-Michael Kühne, Honorary Chairman of Kühne + Nagel International AG, at the inauguration. He added they had found a reliable partner with whom one could easily cooperate. Kühne + Nagel was one of the first companies to locate on the logport I logistics area. Since 2003 Kühne + Nagel has built up its contract logistics capacities step by step to now nearly 125,000 square meters of storage area. Furthermore, the logistics service provider has already operated a warehouse with an area of 60,000 square meters at Kaßlerfeld, a port area on east of the Rhine, since the 90s. From there the company operates for a globally active computer and printer manufacturer with a central warehouse for Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
“The Duisburg location is the heart of our German and Central European network and now has even become our largest handling site worldwide,” emphasized Hans-Georg Brinkmann, Chairman of the Board of Kühne + Nagel in Germany, on the further development of the location. “Our customers and the Kühne + Nagel network benefit from the infrastructure advantages in Duisburg.” The logistics service provider dispatches around 1.6 million pallets a year from here for its customers. Kühne + Nagel employs a total of 750 people in Duisburg, of whom 650 people work in contract logistics alone. The commissioning of the new logistics center will initially add around 50 new jobs.
The logistics center, which the duisport Group developed and built in seven months according to Kühne + Nagel’s wishes, offers the company a further 21,000 square meters of storage space. A 900 square meter integrated office is also part of the state-of-the-art commercial property. The whole complex is supplied with environmentally friendly district heat. An energy efficient lighting system has also been installed.
With the inaugurated new logistics center on the 40,000 square meter corner lot on Gaterweg / Antwerpener Strasse, one of the last free areas on logport I has been developed. But this does not mean that other expansion plans will have to be rejected. Erich Staake: “We offer a wide variety of additional, ideally networked logistics areas, including for large projects in the port area and beyond. The Port of Duisburg logistics site can and will grow further.”
