Groundbreaking ceremony for new logistics center on logport I site / approx 50 new jobs to be created
Duisburg, January 25, 2012 – The duisport Group is setting up a new logistics complex for Kühne + Nagel. The official groundbreaking ceremony today marked the symbolic start of the construction of three halls and an office block with a total floor space of 22,000 square meters. The work will be completed as early as the end of July 2012. Thus the logistics service provider Kühne + Nagel is expanding its location in the Port of Duisburg to almost 185,000 sq.m of hall space – its largest location in the world. The company will then carry out picking, storage and distribution of cleaning and care products for a globally active client from the consumer goods industry for the German and Austrian markets. Around 50 new jobs will be created.
“The Port of Duisburg has thus expanded its already important position in the worldwide network of Kühne + Nagel,” underlined Erich Staake, Chief Executive Officer of Duisburger Hafen AG, highlighting the many years of trusting cooperation.
Since 2003 the company has extended its contract logistics capacities on the logport site step by step and now has almost 125,000 square meters of hall space on logport I. Furthermore, for many years Kühne + Nagel has already operated a warehouse with an area of 60,000 square meters in the Kaßlerfeld part of the port on the right bank of the Rhine.
“This successful establishment is proof of the attractiveness of logport I and the significance of the Port of Duisburg as an international turntable for logistics companies that are active worldwide in global value creation chains,” said Erich Staake.
“It was very easy for us to decide on the Duisburg location again,” confirmed Hans-Georg Brinkmann, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the German Kühne + Nagel organization.
“Our clients and not least our own network profit from its infrastructure advantages.”
The new warehouse is being built on the almost 40,000 square meter corner plot Gaterweg/Antwerpener Straße – one of the last undeveloped areas on logport I. “We can offer a variety of additional attractive logistics areas, including for large projects, in the port and through logport ruhr in the whole Ruhr region – so the port can grow further,” added Erich Staake.
In future the three new halls will offer sufficient space on 21,000 square meters to prepare products for storage, picking and shipping. In addition, a 900 square meter, comprehensively integrated office complex belongs to the state of the art logistics property. The total complex will be supplied with environmentally friendly district heat and has been conceived with a photo-voltaic facility.
