NYK / Yusen Logistics further develops activities in the Port of Duisburg
Duisburg, 15.03.2013 | Yusen becomes second biggest logistics customer in the Port of Duisburg / start of construction of new logistics center on logport I
With the start of construction of a new logistics center Yusen Logistics expands its logistics area in the Port of Duisburg to almost 70,000 square meters. Thus, Duisburg is one of the company’s most important sites worldwide. The new logistics complex, with a size of 26,000 square meters, will be built on one of the last available pieces of land on the logport I site.
“NYK / Yusen was our first customer on logport I and has been one of the major investors in the Port of Duisburg ever since”, says Erich Staake, Chief Executive Officer of Duisburger Hafen AG. “This fifth expansion underlines the strategic significance which the company attaches to the location and its network.”
“logport offers all logistic prerequisites for our customers and due to its direct connection to the container terminal it is also strategically very significant”, confirms Seiji Yuzen, Managing Director of Yusen Logistics, with regard to the consistent development of the location Duisburg.
As early as 1999 did the Japanese forwarding company, formerly known as New Wave, establish its presence on logport I with almost 15,000 square meters of storage area. Under the name NYK Logistics its location Duisburg was continuously developed in the following years. After a multi-level construction of a logistics complex with roughly 30,000 square meters, the duisport Group will now also build the new logistics center for Yusen with a size of 26,000 square meters. With an integrated hazardous goods store of 6,000 square meters Yusen will furthermore expand its service portfolio. In this way, an even wider range of customers can be served in the future. Companies which require high qualitative logistics services are already amongst the main customers of Yusen, including worldwide operating Japanese companies.
The integrated concept of the duisport Group offers direct access to the already existing logistics sites of Yusen on logport I. Furthermore, the new complex fulfills the high qualitative standards for sustainable logistics realty. The inauguration of the new warehouse complex is foreseen for the beginning of 2014.
“The advantageous position of Duisburg as a logistics hub and the increasing demand from our customers made us take this future-oriented decision”, says Seiji Yuzen. “We are happy that the extension is taking place in an integrated approach and in the immediate proximity to our existing realty – this offers high flexibility to our customers”.
Yusen Logistics is a global logistics service provider, which belongs to the market-listed NYK Group. The NYK Group, the largest Japanese shipping company with a business volume of 23 billion US$ (2011), has more than 55.000 employees in over 300 international locations. This makes the NYK Group one of the leading logistics companies in the world. Via NYK Line, the NYK Group is one of the shareholders of the container terminal D3T on logport I. Via D3T, import and export volumes in particular from the sea ports Antwerp and Rotterdam are being handled by rail and barge.
“Yusen’s decision to further develop its activities here is proof of the attractiveness of logport I and the significance of the Port of Duisburg as an international hub for logistics companies acting in global added value chains”, said Erich Staake.
